Sandwich Review in NYC #5 (Pickler and Co.)

Went to Turtle Bay to eat at Pickler and Co. Fair amount of NY Liberty gear as I'm heading there during their championship parade. Fingers crossed there will be no more such parades for NYC sports team until the end of calendar year.

Hot Turkey -- Smoked turkey, pepper jack cheese, chipotle mayo, avocado mayo, pickled jalapeno, ciabatta

I'm becoming a big fan of ciabatta bread. It's a great bread to create neat, managable, hot-pressed sandwiches. Pickler's gets points for neatness and presentation here. Peppers are salty/spicy, melty cheese + turkey combo hits the spot.

4/4! I hand out 4 ratings like candy.

Here's a little history of Pete eating sandwiches. When I was around 12 or so, I would get out of the house more by walking to the nearest Subway at the gas station. We were tucked way out in the suburbs so there weren't a whole lot of choices for walkable markets. I ended up doing this nearly every day during the summer. Play video games, eat some meatball subs.

Later on, I'd graduate to Quizno's subs. They're toasted. There was one at UC Irvine. I also ate some banh-mi's at the old Lee's Sandwich.

Then I moved to NYC in my 20's and ate bodega classics and the good ol' bacon/egg/cheese on a roll for breakfast. I didn't really seek out the best sandwiches. I wasn't in NYC to be a foodie tourist, I was obsessed with making money. Only when my family visited me did we go to famous places like Katz and Russ and Daughters and such but I didn't do that on my own.

Then I met my wife in 2015 and sandwiches just kinda faded because she liked Asian cuisines. We already had enough carbs from rice so we didn't seek out bread. I think also adapted a belief that bread was bad for me. I needed to eat more meats and vegetables and phase out carbs. I don't know what persuaded me to believe that but now I'm just hungry and IDGAF about my calorie composition.

About a month ago, I had a real eye-opener at a place called Bread and Spread out in DUMBO. Braised short rib, shallots, blackberry jam, provolone. Again on Ciabatta. This made me want to start making high-effort sandwiches at home for myself and for my baby. I made her a ham and cheese with maple butter on sourdough today--cut up into little pieces of course. Then I thought--why stop eating great sandwiches? Let's just eat them and write and forget trading altogether. I have an abundance free time because I choose not to work and I often feel bad about it but then I had this thought--why feel bad? I earned this. I worked hard enough to be able to not work and now I can eat how ever many sandwiches I want. This is a reward!
