Sandwich Review in NYC #28 (Gage and Tollner)
This was from last Friday--a bougie lunch with wife at Gage and Toller--which is a high priced, old fashioned seafood/chophouse type resteraunt. You go in there and you feel like you're dining in the 1950's again. We shared two sandwiches. They were quite pricey at $23 but I don't adjust my ratings for price.
First, the Fried Ipswich Clam Po'Boy--Fried Soft Shell Clams, Ramp Tartar Sauce, Shaved Lettuce, Toasted & Buttered Roll
I don't often eat seafood sandwiches but this was fantastic. They're known for great bread at G&T and it delivered here--crispy and buttery. Tasty/crunch fried clam went well with the tartar.
Rating: 4/4
Second, the Hot Ham & Cheese--Ham, Swiss, Honey-Mustard Butter, House Pullman Bread, 'Everything Bagel' Spice, Cherry Pepper Relish
Pretty good sandwich that leans on the decadent side with buttery and sweet flavors. It could use a little more balanace. The bread got just a tad soggy on the bottom and even the well-browned top side in the picture lacked some needed crunch. I had to eat it with a fork and knife.
Rating: 3/4.
